SOCIAL STUDIES COURSES

Text Box: In order to succeed, students need both to be motivated to study and to be able to keep up with the demands of a college-level course.  By taking the AP Exam at the end of the course, which all students are encouraged to do, students have the opportunity to demonstrate that they have learned college level material and are prepared to enter advanced college courses.  Upon passing the exam, students will receive three hours of college credit for Introductory History.

U. S. GOVERNMENT

This course is designed to help students understand the origin and fundamental principles or our system of government. The course describes the organization, philosophy, operation, and function of the political, social, and judicial institution of American government. It also offers the perspective of the evolution of those entities. Required for graduation.

PSYCHOLOGY
 
This class will cover the history, research techniques, and theories in the field of psychology. We will study internal and external influences on one's psychological make-up, expressions of abnormal psychology and their affects on society, and pharmacological treatments of various mental conditions. Resource people will be utilized in the study of psychology as a career.

SOCIOLOGY
 
Sociology engages in the study of people and their lives in groups.  This will be done by examining how people behave in groups and how interaction shapes both individual and group behaviors.  Information will be acquired from a variety of sources -- written, visual, oral, and through interviews and surveys.  By analyzing social change in variety of contexts, the student's ability to deal with change in his/her own lives should increase.   Skill development will include, but is not limited to, the interpretation and application of maps, graphs, charts, political cartoons, primary documents, and other social studies tools.

ECONOMICS
 
This course is designed to introduce students to the basic concepts of the American economy. The course describes the operation, organization, and function of capitalism    and    free   enterprise.   It compares and 
contrasts the American system with economic forces. Economics is required in the Itawamba County School District.

HUMANITIES
 
This course is designed to give students an introductory knowledge of philosophy, art, music, drama, and related history. The class utilizes literature, plays, movies, and art.
